View of the Stellenbosch Mountains
We take R44 towards Somerset West/Strand. A fairly busy road, but good shoulders and beautiful views.

Photo opportunity
No - this is not the road to Strand. This is just a side road that provides a nice photo opportunity.

Somerset West
Once you reach Somerset West, you need to leave road R44 and ride through town towards Strand.

Strand along False Bay
Arriving at the beach in Strand. Great views back towards Cape Town and Table Mountain National Park as well as towards Pringle Bay.

Watch for baboons!
We are very worried about these baboons. Read lots of bad stories about them. Luckily, we finish the day without seeing a single one!

R44 towards Pringle Bay
This is certainly one of the most beautiful roads we have been riding. Great weather, spectacular ocean views and beautiful mountains.

Close to Rooi Els Bay
Life cannot be much better than this. What a spectacular road for cycling.

South Africa's national flower: Protea's
There certainly is a reason they call this route the "Garden Route". Beautiful flowers bloom everywhere - and these Protea's are abundant.

Taking a turn at Rooi Els
From Rooi Els you go up over a hill and leave the coast line. As soon as we leave the coast, we also leave the beautiful weather behind us. The mountains inland are covered with clouds and it gets quite a bit cooler.

Checking the map
During the lunch, we booked rooms with Bucaco Sud B&B in Betty's Bay, and although there are not many roads, it is a little confusing where Betty's Bay actually starts. However, the B&B is situated along the main road and easy to find. Great place to stay with a very friendly host.

Visit the penguin colony
Not far from our B&B in Betty's Baai is a large colony of African "Jackass" Penguins. You pay a small fee to enter the colony. From the boardwalk you can get very close to these cute animals.
